This is an important step because installing the wrong firmware can cause problems, including rendering your device inoperable.

You may also need some of the tools like MsmDownloadTool that come from the community. Note: These tools are not supported by OnePlus so there are risks that you must take into consideration before proceeding. “This recommendation is based on the unstable nature of third-party software; always check if the source is trustworthy whether you download third-party software.

Install OnePlus USB Drivers:
  • Before that, make sure you have installed the appropriate USB drivers on your PC to prevent any communication issues between your OnePlus X and the computer. After you have downloaded the firmware, please find the compressed file, extract it, and paste it into a folder on your PC where it would be easy for you to find. All the files are going to be present in this extracted folder which are required for flashing.

Step 2:

  • Download MsmDownloadTool and install it on your computer if you have not already. This is an important flashing tool that allows you to flash the firmware on your OnePlus X, so make sure this is for your device model or you may get errors.
  • You need to connect the phone to the PC using a USB cable to put it in EDL (Emergency Download) mode.
Step 3:
  • Shut down your OnePlus X completely.
  • Hold the Volume Up button.
  • There you have to press the button, and while pressing it, connect the OnePlus X to your PC via USB cable.
  • Now, your device will boot into EDL (Emergency Download) mode and it will be detected by the flashing tool.

Please Note: If the Device Fails to go to EDL mode, Then Retry or use another USB cable.

Step 4:
  • Open MsmDownloadTool
  • Then go to the MsmDownloadTool folder on your PC.
  • Run the tool as administrator: Right-click on it and select Run as Administrator so that it can have permission to update/modify things as necessary.
  • When it opens, it should show you a UI with which you can load and install firmware.
Step 5:
  • Load Firmware
  • Search for the Target option in MsmDownloadTool
  • Select Target and select the previously extracted firmware files.
  • The tool will automatically detect & load the files required for FLASH.
  • Make sure you load the right firmware files, as this will make sure that the flashing goes off without a hitch.
Step 6:
  • At this point, you can start the flashing process
  • You would typically be prompted to click Start or Download in the MsmDownloadTool window.
  • This is the step after which the process to flash the new firmware onto your OnePlus X begins.
  • The actual flashing process might take a few minutes, depending on your system’s speed and the size of the firmware.
Step 7:
  • Wait for Completion
  • Give it time and let the process do its thing uninterrupted.

While flashing, do not disconnect your device from the computer.
Interrupting it can render the device un-bootable or force you to start over from scratch.

Step 8:
  • Finish and Reboot
  • After flashing is completed, the tool should show a success message.
  • Once it completes, you can unplug your OnePlus X from the computer.
  • Press and hold the power button until the device boots up with the OnePlus logo.

The first boot will inevitably be slower than usual while the system completes setup.

Notes:
  1. Backup Important Data: Flashing firmware will wipe out everything, including apps, contacts, and settings. Do take a full backup before you go ahead — Ensure you have created a full backup.
  2. Please Be Cautious While Downloading Firmware: Using any firmware other when compared to your OnePlus X model might cause your device to become bricked or have functioning issues.

Final Considerations:

Since there are multiple available firmware versions and variants, specific steps may differ slightly, so although this guide should work for most users it is not intended as a step-by-step. For reference, see the official OnePlus documentation and community forums for further assistance.

Be careful when flashing, as doing improperly will lead to boot loops, instability, or dead phones. However, if you are not sure about any step, you can contact OnePlus support or other experienced users in the community.
